Trump Safety Rollbacks Will Be Denounced at Ceremony

On Friday, April 28, at 1:00 p.m., local workers, management, and elected officials will gather at the Workers Memorial in Bushnell Park for a ceremony to honor workers who have died or suffered illness or injuries on the job.

According to a recent state report, 44 workers lost their lives to work-related injuries in 2015, the largest number of fatalities since 2010 (latest data available).

This year is also particularly daunting as the Trump administration attempts to roll back or block regulations that protect workers from serious hazards like toxic silica dust, chemical explosions and workplace violence, and to slash the job safety budget. Attendees will highlight how President Trump’s new order requiring two existing safeguards be removed for every new protection enacted is dangerous and a slap in the face to working people.

The speakers will commemorate those who lost their lives on the job and renew the fight for stronger protections for workers across the country. In Connecticut, this will include efforts to provide PTSD coverage for first responders (SB 27) and creating a funding mechanism that will provide cancer coverage for fire fighters.
